2012 Annual Oration Honoree — Richard N. Taxin, MD, FACR

Richard N. Taxin, MD, FACR was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Central High School he attended the University of Pennsylvania from which he received his B.A. and M.D. degrees. Richard did a straight medical internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (note a pattern) followed by a residency in diagnostic radiology at Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia- Presbyterian Medical Center) in New York City (the pattern is broken). His residency program was interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Air Force at Sheppard AFB where he served as a diagnostic radiologist, while at the same time managing to keep Wichita Falls, Texas out of the hands of the Viet Cong.

In 1974 Dr. Taxin joined Sharpe Associates, a group of 10 diagnostic radiologists and radiation oncologists, practicing at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania. He has been at Crozer ever since. Eventually Sharpe Associates became Southeast Radiology, Ltd., which now numbers 26 diagnostic radiologists who provide medical imaging services at Crozer Chester Medical Center, Taylor Hospital, Springfield Hospital, Media Medical Imaging, and Brinton Lake Medical Imaging. Richard is Vice Chairman of Radiology at Crozer Chester Medical Center and President and Chairman of the Board of Southeast Radiology, Ltd., a position he has held since 1992.

Within diagnostic radiology Richard’s dominant interest has been women’s imaging (mammography and ultrasound). Together with Drs. Barry Goldberg and Peter Arger, Richard helped found the Greater Delaware Valley Ultrasound Society. He has a long time interest in economic, leadership, political and practice management issues as they pertain to radiology; he has frequently been called upon to lecture and discuss these issues with residents. Richard has served both the Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society and the Pennsylvania Radiological Society as treasurer, vice-president, and president.

Richard has been involved with the American College of Radiology for many years, frequently serving as councilor from Pennsylvania to the annual meeting. He has served on the ACR Task Force on International Teleradiology, been the ACR Private Practice Representative to and a Board Member of the Intersociety Conference, and has served as Chairman of the ACR Nominating Committee, Vice Chairman of The Managed Care Committee, and member of the ACR Council Steering Committee. He currently is on the Board of Directors of RADPAC, is the editor of the new ACR handbook on capitation, and is a nominee to serve on the ACR Board of Chancellors.

Richard lives in Rose Valley with his wife Marion. They are the parents of three children (Adam Taxin, Aimee Taxin Rubin, and Brett Taxin) and have three grandchildren (Andrew, Will, and Natalie Rubin). Aside from his family and radiology Richard’s main passions are tennis, travel, the theater, reading, and politics. As a long   suffering fan his love for the Phillies and Eagles continues despite little reward and much disappointment.
