William Herring, MD, FACR is Vice-chairman and Radiology Residency Program Director at Albert Einstein Medical Center and Associate Professor of Radiology at Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Herring received his undergraduate degree from Temple University College of Liberal Arts (1966) and his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine (1970).
For his entire medical career, he has been at Albert Einstein in Philadelphia where he completed his internship (1971) and his residency in Radiology (1974). He has served as the Program Director of the Radiology Residency program there continuously for 31 years, perhaps the longest such term in the country.
He has served as President of the Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society, a counselor to the American College of Radiology, a member of the Boards of the Pennsylvania Radiological Society and the Association of Program Directors in Radiology and will serve as president of the Alliance of Medical Student Educators in Radiology (AMSER) next year.
He is the author of a best selling textbook on the fundamentals of radiology called Learning Radiology: Recognizing the Basics, soon to be released in its 2nd edition. It has replaced the venerable Lucy Squires textbook in dozens of medical schools worldwide.
Ten years ago, a lifetime in web years, he set out to develop a website to post his PowerPoint lectures for the Einstein residents, LearningRadiology.com. The first year, about 15,000 visited the website. Last year, over 3 million visited the site and now, almost as many visit the site each day as visited it during the whole first year. Despite its popularity, it remains free with no required registration and no ads. Dr. Herring produces almost all of the material himself, develops, designs, publishes and maintains the site himself and funds the upkeep himself. He also developed and maintains the website for the Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society and Einstein's Radiology Department.
He has published almost 60 video podcasts in radiology, available free on iTunes. LearningRadiology has a presence on the Facebook social network and has over 9,000 fans. His daily "tweets" describing a different radiological sign each day have over a thousand followers on Twitter.
In 2010, he was named one of the "25 Most Influential in Radiology" by RT Image Magazine. He was the recipient of the Roentgen Ray Society's Outstanding Educator Award in 2004. This year, he will receive the Association of Program Directors in Radiology's Annual Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.
He is married to Patricia and has two daughters and two grandsons.
